Abstract

The objective of this study is to understand the sedimentary processes and paleo-environments of early Pliocene Ailioachioa Formation. The age of Ailioachioa formation is about 4 to 5 ma in the early stage of collision in Taiwan. This study presents sedimentary observations and interpretations on two section in southwestern Taiwan which is Tsengwen Hsi section and Hoko Hsi section. By employing sedimentary facies analysis we recognized 12 lithofacies, including 2 mudstone facies, 3 mudstone & sandstone interbeded facies, 6 sandstone facies and MTD . On the basis of different combination of lithofacies we can recognize 7 facies associations, including outer offshore, middle offshore ,inner offshore , lower shoreface , upper shoreface, prodelta and delta front. These facies association occurred in two major sedimentary environments: (1) wave and tidal-influenced delta and (2) wave-influenced open marine.
