A preliminary resistivity study of Chau-Chou Fault

Liang,Hsung-Hung

Abstract

The RIP method is used to investigate the location and geological structure of Chauchou fault. An electrical prospecting including 14 profiles of electric resistivity image profiling was conducted on Chauchou fault from Ching-ye to Jia-lu. The results indicate that the Chaochou fault has a wide fault zone of several hundred meters, including main fault zone and minor fault zone. The rocks on the eastern side of the Chaouchou fault have a dominant resistivity of 200-600Ω-m. While the earth on the western side of the fault can be divided into two parts, the upper part has a dominant resistivity of 200-700Ω-m of several tens meters in thickness varying with location, and the lower part has a dominant resistivity of 30-200Ω-m.

Boundaries of electric resistivity discontinuities which dip westwardly were found in the profile at Ching-ye, Ching-shan-tsuen, Jia-yi, and which dip eastwardly were found in the profile at Shin-tsuo and Shin-tsuo2. A shape of anticline exists in the eastern part of the profile at San-di-men. Electric resistivity discontinuities can not be found at Shiang-tan, Shiang-tan2, and Guei-chung.

The core draw from Jia-lu show a fault exists in depths between 46.124m and 52.777m of two wells. The trace of the Chauchou fault passed trough the northern part of Jia-lu elementary school.
