The kinetics of silica-water reactions

Chen Chein-Hong

Abstract

The fault zone gouge sample of Taiwan Chelungpu-fault Drilling Project (TCDP) is about 12 cm, and we only analyze the 2 cm. This sample brings us a lot of questions to think.
For example, according to heat function, the fracture energy is not the same as our calculations. It is only half of all. Besides, the small grain size is not irregular anymore, it is closed to sphere. It doesnˇ¦t like the reason by nature fracture.
So, we think the answers are linking to the missing energy.

? Here, we choice the rate model of silica, because it is more than 60% on Earth. We made the experiment to get the data of precipitation, dissolution and saturation.
SiO2(s) + 2H2O(l) ? H4SiO4(aq)
When silica-water reacts, it must concern to the heat and energy. We think maybe this is the key to help us to find the missing energy of fracture.
