Hydrocarbon Potential:implications from material and maturity
Speaker: Shun-Wen Yu
Abstract
Characteristics of organic material and maturity are two important factors to affect hydrocarbon potential. Miocene lignite and Eocene high-volatile bituminous coal from southeastern Kalimantan, Indonesia were selected and made into different maceral composition by density gradient centrifugation. Then, analyses include petrography, pyrolysis and Micro–FTIR were performed. Although Miocene lignite and Eocene bituminous coal possess similar maceral composition, Eocene bituminous coal exhibits higher aliphatic source than Miocene lignite after pyrolysis, which suggests the hydrocarbon potential was affected mostly by maturity. Furthermore, after studying different centrifuged compositions of lignite and bituminous coal, we found that for both Miocene lignite and Eocene bituminous coal, hydrocarbon potential is higher in samples with enriched liptinite contents. Finally, a case of Nigeria was studied for assessing hydrocarbon potential.
