Source Parameters of Regional Earthquakes determined by Broadband Data
Reporter: Hui-Wen Cheng
Abstract
Development of the centroid-moment-tensor (CMT) inversion in the early 1980's allowed the systematic determination of source parameters for many large- and moderate-sized earthquakes on a global scale. Later on, the knowledge of seismic velocity structures on regional scale and establishment of regional broadband networks facilitated the routine application of CMT inversion to regional earthquakes. Since 1994, the Broadband Array in Taiwan for Seismology (BATS) has enabled the systematic determination of source parameters for regional earthquakes using the CMT technique. Thus, we can use the waveform inversion technique to determine the source parameters, such as moment tensor, focal mechanism, and hypocenter by using the stored Green's functions. In Taiwan, BATS is doing the continuous effort to systematically report source parameters of regional events using broadband waveform records. Nowadays we can search for the moment tensor inversion results and source parameters of the past earthquakes from the BATS website.
