Displacement of surface monuments with noise in GPS coordinate time series

Abstract
Most researches using GPS data consider only the white noises, while color noises are also important factors. To understand the effects of color noises, Mao et al. (1999) conducted a research about the noise in GPS coordinate time series, and found that when the length of time series becomes longer, the effects of random walk noise become significant. Random walk noises are considered as the causes of displacements of surface monument.
In an attempt to understand and compensate for the nontectonic displacements (monument displacements), Wyatt (1982) and Wyatt (1989) make some experiments at Pi n on Flat Observatory (PFO), located in southern California between the San Jacinto and San Andreas fault zones. These studies found out that weathering of the ground and underground materials seems to be the primary factor controlling the long-period displacement of surface monuments. And sophisticated reference monuments will be required if observatory-based experiments are used to record tectonic deformations faithfully.
